Can you believe there was a time where the Web didn’t exist? The horror! Well let me tell you there was. There was a time when people talked to each other face to face and not through a screen. A time where you would have to walk to someone to talk to them or meet them. A time where you had to go to a library to do research for homework or just to learn about something you were interested in. Wow, that must’ve been a nice experience to go through; a time I would love to experience, the time before the Web.
I am a part of the generation that since the beginning had access to the Web. The generation that people from other generations don’t like that much saying that we are addicted to our phones, the Web and social media. Which of course its not true, or is it? We were born with access to maybe one of the greatest creations that were ever invented but what is the big deal? Yes, we need to interact more with others and maybe work on our social skills but having the internet is also a great tool to build a future, do a hobby or do other things that benefit you.
Being 18 years, my whole life, with the internet has made it easier. I have the opportunity of doing a search on the internet and getting thousands of results in seconds. I get to meet people from different parts of the world through this thing called social media. I think that having the internet has made my life easier but not necessarily better. I say this because it is also a weapon other people use to make us feel less and not give ourselves the respect that we deserve. With this I get into the topic of social media.
Social media. The first thing we see in the morning. We check it hoping someone gave us a like, retweeted our tweets or sent us a snap. We’re becoming robots with the same routine every day and trust me, I am very much included. I wake up, look at my phone and do my everyday routine with it in my hand. We are so caught up on it that sometimes we even forget that other people are around us. We go to dinner and what is everyone doing? Checking their phones. Not just the young people, like many say. No, we are all spending way too much time on our phones.
We live our life thinking that if we didn’t post it didn’t happen. Trying to prove the world something but what is it? What is this big thing that we need to prove? We have this voice in our head saying that if our picture didn’t get enough likes it’s because I look ugly, that if I don’t have the latest phone, I’m not cool, that if I didn’t get enough retweets, I’m not popular. We need to try to not let it get to our head, which I know sometimes can be difficult.
Going back to the topic of the phone and the internet. I accept that I’m a person who is on her phone most of the time, like I said since I wake up. The reason is because the phone is not only for social media. It is also used to communicate and for entertainment purposes like music, videos and shows. This is the reason that I’m always using my phone. If I check what apps I’m always using it’s going to say Netflix, Spotify and YouTube. Even though I’m most of my time on these apps I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to my phone. I really don’t like when people say to me: “all you do is be on your phone” or when a part of my body hurts, no matter what part, someone says, “that’s because you’re on your phone all day” and I’m like what? I like to think that I can survive without my phone, but can you?
